A pretty bicycle picture and random thoughts from the week....

                         Source: designspongeonline.com via jennifer on Pinterest

Do you ever feel gypped when a big time blogger posts something you posted about just days before?  It's happened to me twice now {same blogger}.  I'm sure it's purely coincidence, but I have a moment where I'm like, hey!  Stop stealing my favorite stuff!  {as if.}

I'm so not into celebrities, but I have a sudden fascination with the royal wedding.  I'll be watching my recording of it...no I didn't get up at 3 in the morning to watch live.  I guess it's the little girl in me who wants to see a real prince and princess get married.

Does anyone else find it weird that you have to stab a potato a hundred times before microwaving it?  I mean, you don't have to do that with anything else...thank goodness.

*********************************************************************************************************************************
Hooray!  It's Friday!  And it's springtime!

This weekend, I'll be planting some more flowers {in addition to the ones I planted last weekend}, cleaning my house {it's filthy}, and spending time with some of my favorite peeps.  Simple, relaxing, fun.

What's on your agenda?  Did anyone get up early/stay up late to watch the wedding?  If so, tell me about it!

Thanks for all your wonderful comments this week!  You guys truely are the best.  Happy weekend!

In case you missed it this week:
I am blessed.
Found some fun stuff.
Revealed some things about myself, A-Z style.
And, talked about life.

Life...

                            Source: lanipauli.tumblr.com via jennifer on Pinterest

Since my half marathon, I've been thinking alot about life. I've been trying to embrace more moments, choose happiness, and dream about the future.   I've been evaluating what's really important, and figuring out how to live for those things instead of the things that don't really matter at all.

I'm learning to embrace some of the things that scare me.  I'm learning that it's okay to be a little scared, and that sometimes that just means I'm really living.  Stepping outside my comfort zone is a good thing.  In all actuality, the thing that scares me more than anything is picturing myself as an old woman, looking back over my life and thinking, "what if I hadn't been so scared."  That's what really scares me.

This all became even more clear yesterday, when I learned of the passing of one of my blog friends. It's so surreal to me. Just like that.

This life is short, my friends. Love the people you love well, and step out of your comfort zone from time to time.

What are you most afraid of?

Other than the real important things, I'm terrified of ostriches, space and public speaking.

A to Z, all about me...

               Source: flickr.com via jennifer on Pinterest

Through blogging, I've had the pleasure of getting to know Galit from Slow Noodle.  {I've mentioned her before, you know.}  I'm telling you, this girl has more style in her little finger than I have in my whole body.  Her posts are full of eye candy, and to top it off, she lives in the magical land of Austrailia.  {A place that remains mysterious and wonderful in my mind.}  I think she's way cool.  Anyway, I'm humbled and honored that she passed the versatile blogger award to me!  I love the way she set it up as an A-Z thing, so I'm following her lead...

Age: 30, although I keep thinking I'm 31....I need to stop rushing that!
B
ed Size: King.  We enjoy our space.  Cuddling sounds nice, but it doesn't last long, and if one of us touches the other during the night by accident, it's not unusual to get a kick out of it.  We're selfish sleepers, what can I say.
Chore you hate : Mopping the floors...always hurts my back.
Dogs: I really like other people's dogs, but only cats in our house.  Never say never, but not right now!
Essential start of your day: A nice hot shower.
Favourite Color: Green
Gold or silver: Silver.  My wedding rings are white gold.  Although, today I'm wearing gold accessories.
Height: 5 ft. 7 inches.  {or maybe 5'6"...I think I've shrunk.}
Instruments I play (or have played): I took piano lessons throughout my childhood, but haven't touched one forever.  I also played the clarinet and the violin.  Oh, and I rocked a harmonica for a stint as a child...man, my parents were patient!
Job Title: Creative Designer  {that's a fancy title for Graphic Designer}
Kids: Hopefully soon!  ;)
Live: Just outside Kansas City in the heart of the good ole USofA.
Mom's Name: Sue
Nickname: Oh, I've had a lot:  Jeni, Jen, Jen Jen, Jen S., Stuts, Squirt Tail, Dodo Head, Buttons  Overnight hospital stays: None where I was the patient, but many during Jon's treatment.
Pet Peeve: When people say "Alls"  like, "Alls you have to do is..."  Drives me crazy.  Also, the dirt that gathers on the bottom of the toilet near the bolts.  You know in that area that's all curvy?  So hard to clean!
Quote from a movie: Oh man, his is really my husband's department.  Let's see...I'm drawing a blank on movie quotes.  All I can think of are Friends quotes  "Chicken?  I could eat some chicken."  "That's a moo point.  It's like a cow's opinion.  It's moo."  "We do enjoy the silliness."
Right or left handed: Right
Siblings: Three half sisters.  One from my dad and two from my mom.
Time you wake up: On mornings I run, 5:30.  On lazy mornings, 6:30.
Underwear:  Yes.  Yes, I wear underwear.
Vegetables you dislike: Honestly, I don't think there are any.  I do dislike some ways of preparing veggies though.  For instance, sweet potatoes with brown sugar and marshmallows make me want to gag, but I'll eat them baked.
What makes you run late: Lots of things, but mostly my tendency toward OCD.  I'm notorious for checking and rechecking to make sure the stove is off, doors are locked and pantry door is closed so Chloe doesn't help herself to a feast.
X-rays you've had done: Teeth....I think that's it.
Yummy food you make: Well, I enjoy alot of things, but I guess I'm best known for my baking.  Especially my pumpkin cake.  {well, Kraft's pumpkin cake}  It's become a tradition every Thanksgiving.
Zoo animal: I love watching the big cats!  {hello, crazy cat lady!}

I'm going to tag Julie {from Elliven}, Sandy {from Sandy a La Mode} and Ashley {from After Nine to Five}.  Hope you ladies will play along!

A few fun finds...

Aren't these earrings gorgeous?  {They're made to look like gauges, but are just regular earrings.} There's also something so pretty about this picture.  Makes me want to soak up the sun and walk barefoot in the grass.

I've had this shop tucked in my favorites for a while.  Perhaps it's my inner crazy cat lady {oh, who am I kidding, I am a crazy cat lady!} but I find this clutch quite charming!

{I'm unsure of the source of this photo, if you know who deserves credit, please let me know!}
This last one is not a fun find per se, but when I came across this image on Pinterest, it took my breath away.  It reminds me so much of my first glimpse into our reception.  I remember stepping into our barn, and being so swept away with how absolutely gorgeous it was.  Absolutely one of my favorite memories from the night.
Happy Tuesday, friends!
How's your week going so far?

I'm linking up to Tickle me Tuesday over at Oh, Yes Teacher!  Head on over to see more fun finds from lots of talented bloggers.

On being blessed....

                       Source: kaleyrae.tumblr.com via jennifer on Pinterest

I'm quite certain that I must be the luckiest gal around.

I have the most wonderful husband.  He's more than I could possibly deserve.

Our families may have once been considered broken, but I've watched them transform into something so beautiful.  There are no longer breaks, but facets that reflect love upon us from so many angles it's overwhelming sometimes.

We have the most amazing friends.  People who not only are wonderful to us, but people who are literally changing the world.  I'm so honored to be counted among their friends.

Last, but most certainly not least, I have a God who loves me.  I'm so grateful this day for the celebration of Easter, for the hope it brings every day of the year.

I am so, so blessed

And, that's all I have to say this Monday morning.

A pretty bicycle picture and random thoughts from the week....

                      Source: heatherbailey.typepad.com via jennifer on Pinterest

Isn't it weird how everything around us had to be thought up by someone?  Like, for instance, stairs.  Simple enough, but someone had to figure out how to make them work without collapsing, and how to figure the rise of them.

A friend and I got in a discussion about piercing baby girls' ears.  Mine were pierced at 9 months. {I remember it...weird story for another time.} All the girls in my family have their ears pierced as babies.  My friend on the other hand, wanted to let her daughter make that decision herself.  I can totally see both sides.  On the one hand, most women in our society have pierced ears, so maybe it's better to do it while they're little and unafraid.  On the other hand, there's probably something to be said for letting her decide she wants something, being brave and strong, and doing it.  What do you think?

Disqus is outta here!  No more Disqus widget.  I have been getting reports for a while that some of you were having difficulty commenting.  I should have just done this a long time ago.  Unfortunately, there's a whole period of time that I didn't have it synced correctly, and now all those comments are missing from the blog.  :(  Oh well.  I'm hoping now you all will be able to comment with ease!

I have a serious problem with not seeing things that are right in front of my face.

******************************************************************************************************************************
Wishing you all a wonderful Easter!  I hope your weekend is filled with love and all things springy and delightful.

I have a piggy bank order to work on, and will probably go for my first run since the half marathon.  {I'm finally feeling human again.}  Ohhhh, perhaps I'll have Jon get my bike down from it's winter hanging spot and take it for a spin!

Sunday we'll be going to church to celebrate the ressurrection.  I have a special excitement this year about Easter.  My faith has grown deeper over the last year, and the promise of this holiday has my heart bursting with joy.

In the afternoon we'll be off to dinner on the farm.  Oh, how I love dinners on the farm.  Grilled pork chops and freshly shaken gimlets, I cannot wait!

What are your plans for the weekend?

Dear Jon...

                           via jennifer on Pinterest

Happy anniversary, my love.

I cannot believe it's been 4 years since we became husband and wife.  In many ways, it seems like yesterday.  Well, maybe not yesterday.  It also feels like we've always been together.  I mean, we have been together for almost 11 years...that's a long time.  But, the marriage part has most definitely been the best part.

I cannot imagine my life without you.  Thank you for being my other half and for loving me so well.  You are absolutely my best friend, and I'm so lucky to get to spend my life with you.

Thank you for making me laugh.  I so enjoy the silliness.  You are the absolute best at quoting things, or just making up the lamest, most hilarious phrases I've ever heard.  {Sugar Ray Yo Mama.  Seriously, I'm cracking up just thinking about it!}

Thank you for loving me, despite the crazy, deranged child that takes me over sometimes.  You most certainly have seen my worst side, and still haven't ran for the hills.  You must really, really love me.

Most of all, thank you for taking a leap of faith with me four years ago today.  It's the best thing I've ever done.  I've grown to love you more every day since.

I cannot wait to see what our 5th year brings with it....it's bound to be our best year yet.

I love you.  Love, love, love, love, love.

Jen

Happy Sweet 16, Lydia!

My baby sister turns 16 today!  {That makes me feel incredibly old.}
 {sorry for the blurry photos...it was early.}

I stopped by this mornng to drop off a birthday girl ribbon for her to wear to school today.  I'm not sure if she'll wear it all day, it might not be "cool", but she humored me at least!

16 years ago today I was wearing a striped henly.  I always remember what I was wearing the day she was born.  I also remember hearing Lightning Crashes by Live on my pink plastic radio while I got ready that morning.  Somehow it seemed fitting in a weird, creepy, scary kind of way.  {for those of you who don't remember, there is a placenta mentioned in that song.  ewwww}

It's hard to believe it's been 16 years, but she's grown into such a beautiful young lady, and I'm so proud to be her big sister.

7 Things I learned from Running a Half Marathon...

        Source: ourtimetochange.tumblr.com via jennifer on Pinterest

1. A positive attitude makes all the difference in the world.   I tend toward pessimism, but staying positive is a magical thing.  It certainly makes things more fun!

2. I really can do anything I set my mind to. {cliche, I know}  If you had told me 5 years ago that I'd run a half marathon, I would have laughed in your face!  I hated running!  2 years ago, I would have said, maybe.  In January, I was saying...I think I'll try.  Two weeks ago, I thought, I can't do this.  But then, I just decided to do it.  Nike style.

3. It may not be easy, but it's worth it.  {whatever it is} Really, what in life worth having is easy to get?  The best things take work.  I think God designed it that way on purpose so we won't take things for granted.

4. Things are easier than I think they'll be.  In complete contrast to #3, things just aren't that complicated.  I have a tendency to make things waaay more difficult than they need to be.  I need to stop taking myself so seriously.

5. I'm just as deserving as the next gal.  Why not me?  I've spent alot of my life feeling like "I'm not the kind of person that gets that." Pshhhh, why not!?

6. Sometimes you just have to keep running.  It might be all you can do to keep forward motion, but you just have to dig deep and find it.

7.  Loosening my kung fu grip on life is a good thing.  I should do that more.  Not everything needs to be within my control.  As a matter of fact, very few things are.  The only thing firmly within my grasp is how I react.  {see #1}  God will take care of the rest.  He always has.

I feel like I learned so much through the process of training and running my race on Saturday.  I really wanted to make a record of the lessons I learned.  I'm already finding ways to apply them to other areas of my life.  I promise, I won't keep rambling about it, but I need to cement them somewhere so I don't ever forget them.

Thank you all so much for your support!  I am so grateful for my blog friends.  It blows my mind how modern technology has allowed for friendships to blossom across the globe.  You guys are awesome, and I'm so glad to know you.

p.s. The above image was one of many mantras that helped me get through the race.  That, and this one

Take THAT bucket list!

Hi guys!  How are you!?  I missed you.

So, It has been a whole week since I've talked to you, and boy has it been a crazy one!  Sorry about not checking in Friday like I'd planned...we had some travel difficulties, missed connecting flights and didn't get home until Friday afternoon, instead of Thursday night.

Anyway...what I really want to tell you about today is this:

I ran a half marathon on Saturday!!!

13.1 miles....I know!

You might be thinking..."wait...did I know this was happening?  Has she mentioned this before?"

Nope.  I kept it pretty under wraps.  You see, I was scared of failure.  I was scared of announcing to the world that I was doing this and then not being able to do it, and feeling like a schmuck.

But, I did it, and I want to shout it from the rooftops!

Honestly, guys, I'm so proud of myself.  I know you're not supposed to say that, but I just did.  I am so proud!  You see, I'm not a natural athlete, let alone runner.  I have to really work at even wanting to train.  This is not something I ever thought I would accomplish....but I did, and it feels so good!

And you want to know the best part?  I maintained a positive attitude.  {which I believe is 90% of it.} You see, two weeks ago, I had a complete meltdown.  I sat on my couch and cried like a deranged child.  My poor husband had to talk me down from the ledge.  I was ready to throw in the towel, but, that day, I decided to take the pressure off myself, and I ran 12 miles.  I decided during those 12 miles in the cold and drizzle, that the only expectation was that I finish it.

I knew on Friday night that it was going to be good.  I could feel it in my bones.  I wasn't going to freak out that I had been traveling for 4 days, or that it was going to be 38 degrees at the start {after all, I had ran 12 in that cold}.  I wasn't going to worry about the other runners.  This wasn't about them anyway.  I was doing this for me, and I was going to enjoy every second.  And, that's exactly what I did.

I had to fight back tears a few times.  The good kind of tears.  It was so incredible.....I want to do it again.

I really want to encourage you guys to do something you've always wanted to do but thought you couldn't.  I promise you, if I can do this, anything is possible.

What's the most physically challenging thing you've ever done?

Miles Baby...

Miles Sunbathing....photo taken a few weeks ago

How was your weekend?  Good, I hope.  Mine...not so good, but all things considered, it was okay.

My sweet Miles baby threw another clot Saturday morning.  It just sucks.  There's no other way to describe it.  We do everything we can to prevent it, but it just happens sometimes.

He seems to be on the mend.  Saturday was hard...really hard.  I got zero sleep Saturday night.  Yesterday, we were able to give him fluids and he's starting to show signs of getting back to normal.  I even got a chirpy greeting this morning!

I won't go into alot of detail, or dwell on this long, but I wanted you all to know it's going on.  You've been so wonderful to sent thoughts and prayers his way in the past.  You guys are truly the best.

On top of all this, I leave tomorrow morning on a three day business trip.  {of course, right?}  So, I'm hoping to see great strides this evening so I can leave and not worry every second about my baby.  I 100% trust Jon to take good care of him.  He's his baby too.

I had every intention of planning out some posts for you all while I was gone, but with everything going on this weekend, it just didn't happen.  Thanks for understanding.  I'll be back Friday with some randomness.

Until then, have a great week everyone!

Not so random...

                       Source: designspongeonline.com via jennifer on Pinterest

So, I either didn't have many random thoughts this week, or I just forgot to record them.  No randomness this Friday morning!  {I'll still give you a pretty bicycle picture, though.}

This week has gone so fast, but has left me feeling pretty exhausted.  I was ready for bed at 8:30 last night, and let me tell you, I slept so good!

This weekend, I have lots to get done.  I'll be traveling part of next week for work, and I have to prepare myself.  Not just physically {getting travel sized toiletries, finding a book to take, clearing off my camera} but also mentally.  I'm not the best at flying.  I get claustrophobic and completely over think it.  Any tips for staying calm?  {That sounds like I'm going to have a meltdown.  I won't...it's a silent struggle.}  Also, I'm not so good at being away from my honey...I suppose I can survive. :(

I have a few piggy banks to finish up this weekend, and Sunday we're going to go see one of our best friends' baby get baptized.  Can't wait!

What's going on with you?  Do you travel much?  Business or pleasure?

Toy Planters...

A while back, I fell in love with this tutorial over at Design Kitty.

            Source: designkitty.net via jennifer on Pinterest

Yeah, that's a plastic toy horse turned planter...brilliant!   What a fun way to use some old toys in a new and fresh way.  In DK's case, she had saved this from her childhood.  I just think that's awesome, and so brave!  I'd probably get caught up in the  senimentality of it, and miss out on enjoying it!

For those of us not lucky enough to have fabulous animal toys lying around {or not brave enough to alter them}  there's this store.  Plaid Pidgeon sells planters made of dinosaurs and safari animals.  How fun are these!?
I love the bright colors and can just picture one of these rockin' it on my desk.

What do you think?  Have these been missing from your life?

Also, I wanted to thank you all for your responses to yesterday's post!  They had me laughing all day.  In all actuality, yes, it startled me, but I never really thought I was in real danger.  I mean, maybe for like 1/2 a second, but it was in a really open part of the trail by an elementary school, and there were tons of people around.  It was more funny than anything!  A little scary, but mosty funny.

Also, if you haven't entered for your chance to win a box of Helliemae's Salt Caramels,  what are you waiting for!?  Totally delicious, and so easy to enter

And then, a Gorilla jumped out of the bushes...

Funny story.  Saturday, I went for a run on the trail near my house.  I was on my way back, and was on this uphill section.  I was chugging along, and starting to feel sorry for myself.  I was even thinking of walking for a minute or two.  I had my headphones on, but at a volume where I could still hear things around me, you know, so I could be aware of my surroundings.  {or so I thought}

I heard a thud behind me, turned and looked, only to see this lumbering toward me:
via gorillasuits.com
The following is what went through my mind in the span of 2 seconds:

What was that noise?
That's a gorilla.
That's a guy in a gorilla costume, that's weird.
He's coming at me....holy crap, he's coming at me!
Is he gonna attack me?  What do I do!?
Oh my god, what if this dude in this gorilla costume tries to rape me!?

Then, I said "Oh, God!" and he stopped.  Just when I was about to wet myself,  I realized he was laughing.  That's when I noticed the guy on the hill with a camera.  They both had a good laugh.  "Not cool!  Not cool!"  was my response.  He's lucky I didn't punch him in the face.

Yeah, so I got punked by a guy in a gorilla suit.  I'm probably gonna end up on you tube...you just watch.

The good news was, it gave me a little boost of adrenaline.  I didn't need to walk after that!

Have you ever had anything like this happen?  What would you have done?

Helliemae's Salt Caramels Review and Giveaway...

dGood morning, friends!  I hope you all had a delightful weekend.  Mine was full and busy, but in the best kind of way.
I thought it would be fun to kick off this week with a review and giveaway!  How does that sound? {insert collective cheers here.}

I recently had the pleasure of trying Helliemae's Salt Caramels.  While reading the website, I found myself drooling over the description of the classic salt caramels:  "traditional deep, rich, buttery caramels accented with flaky, crunchy sea salt on top"...um, yes please!  Well, let me tell you, they did not disappoint!  These treats are the real deal.  I've had some other salt caramels that were quite frankly, too salty and not very good.  Helliemae's on the other hand capture that perfect balance of salty & sweet.  This is no doubt due to the quality ingredients and homemade attention that goes into each batch.  Helliemae's owner, Ellen, makes each 4 pound batch  by hand.  Ellen prides herself in sourcing ingredients locally in her hometown of Denver.  She uses organic and hormone free ingredients, and her packaging is 100% recycled. She even stamps each box by hand.

Upon receiving my salt caramels in the mail, I was immediately impressed with the presentation.  The kraft paper box with the stamped top presented these homemade delights so well.  Once you open the box, you get whiffs of the treat that lies inside.  Each caramel is individually wrapped in parchment paper, and has a wonderful old-fashioned vibe to it.  I was blown away with the size of each piece as well.  Measuring about 1 1/2 inches square, they make for the perfect, satisfying treat!

{Helliemae's Caramels also come in Coffee, Cardamom and seasonal flavors like Caramel Apple and Candy Cane.  Yum!}

If you're a Denver resident, you can find a list of local establishments that carry Helliemae's Salt Caramels here.  The rest of us can buy the treats online here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, now for the part you've all been waiting for.  Ellen has offered up a box of Classic Salt Caramels to one lucky jdavissquared reader!  {Thanks, Ellen!}

{This giveaway is now closed.  Go here to see who won! }

A pretty bicycle picture and random thoughts from the week....

            Source: jillthomasphotography.com via jennifer on Pinterest

At lunch on Thursday, I watched two children slap each other, and scream at the top of their lungs.  Then one of them burped.  The mom told him, "You have to cover your mouth and use your manners."  Um, is it polite to hit and yell?  I'm confused.

I bought a bag of m&m's {peanut butter} only to find later that there was a slit in the bag.  Oh, don't worry, I ate them anyway.

*I'm worried that Disqus isn't working for some of you. :( If you would please, please tell me via a quick comment, if it's working {it can be short, just "mine works"...I'd love it if you said more, but I really at least want to know if it's working}.  If it's not working, if you'd shoot me a quick email and let me know that too, I'd love you forever!  I really want it to be easy for you all to comment, and would love to know what would make so.  Any suggestions are welcome.  Thanks!

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

It's Friday once again, can you believe it?  This week went by in the blink of an eye.

I'm so excited, because despite chilly weather this week, things are starting to bud around here!  Spring is just around the corner, and I'm eager to plant some flowers.  Cannot wait!

This weekend, I'll be painting orders {which include 8 Easter baskets...Mediums are now sold out...only Smalls left!}  We also have plans for dinner at a Japanese Steakhouse with some great friends tomorrow evening.  I'm anticipating big laughs, which is always so nice.  Aaaand, small group on Sunday.  My tank should be full come Monday morning, after some quality time with great peeps.

Happy Weekend to you all!  Hope it's fabulous!

How often do you go to dinner with friends?

*please don't forget to let me know about Disqus...I'd really appreciate it!
